Saint John, the holy Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord, whom the Lord called the greatest of the prophets, concludes the history of the Old Testament and opens the era of the New Testament. St. John the Forerunner paved the way for the Lord Jesus Christ, calling sinners to repentance and baptism. During one of his baptisms along the river Jordan, some Pharisees and Sadducees showed up. St. John addresses them directly calling them a brood of vipers, warning them that the path they are on will lead to wrath and destruction. The Pharisees and sadducees were considered rulers and keepers of the Mosaic law but with a hypocritical and flawed understanding of what it actually meant. Also, while locked away in prison by Herod Antipas he continues to call out the sin of the Tetrarch unto his own death and martyrdom by beheading. He lived without fear of this world, resisting the temptation to avoid suffering.
